Swimmer killed in shark attack at New Zealand beach

By Niki Gulddal and Mark Jørgensen.

We found an article on CNN.com where we could read about this poor fellow who has been eaten by a shark on a beach in New Zealand the 27.02.13.

The guy was in the 40s and he was out swimming when he met a 4 meters big white shark. He tried to swim off but he couldn’t swim from the great white shark.

People on the shore saw the whole bloodbath but couldn’t do anything to help the poor fellow who was doomed.

Pio Mose who was fishing near the place where the bloody scene found place said to the CNN," We saw him rolling around, there was blood everywhere on the water”. And Pio Mose believes that he saw two other sharks join the eating off the lifeless body.

What is CNN?

CNN is an international TV station that brings news all over the world, 24 hours a day, both on TV and the Internet. They have a very large audience because it’s an American channel, and English is understood almost all over the world. We want to look further into how CNN builds up their articles on their website.

“Swimmer killed in shark attack at New Zealand beach” is a news article, that’s built up by some of the 5 news criteria. The article is significant because, it touches a lot of people in the Auckland area, because it’s the most popular beach in New Zealand.

CNN doesn’t appeal to our emotions, but the article also hits those who witnessed the incident, when the poor guy were being ripped off by the white shark, and you can almost feel how terrible a sight it must have been. The picture in the article shows us some of the witnesses grieving at the beach after the shark attack.

The central focus in this history is not that the shark has killed the guy but that the great white shark has returned to New Zealand. There have been less than 20 shark attacks with fatal results in the last 175 years, in that area.

CNN is using some shark expert knowledge to discover why there suddenly are shark attacks in the New Zealand area again. Besides that they are using some interviews of some local people, who were witnesses to this horrible accident.

CNN has placed this article in the top world stories, it catches the audience at first with the title, but when you’re reading on it is a bit boring article because the way they have built it up. It’s only a summary of the episode, so there aren’t any details about the accident.

The journalist has used some common words that are easy to understand; following the death, police closed the beach and several others nearby. he’s not using slang, or composite words.
